Shotcrete, freeform, infinity

New concrete pools across the Gold Coast.

Sprayed shotcrete or block-and-render construction. Freeform curves, rectangular lap, infinity edge or beach-entry. Pebble, quartz or full mosaic-tile interior. Best for irregular shapes, canal blocks and bespoke architectural design. Built to QBCC standards with full engineer-certified rebar specification.

Concrete construction methods on the Gold Coast.

  • Sprayed shotcrete (most common): Excavate, install rebar cage, spray gunite/shotcrete from a high-pressure nozzle to form the shell, hand-screed and cure. Strongest method, allows any shape. ~$55K–$220K. Industry default for canal and architectural builds.
  • Block-and-render: Concrete block walls, render-and-waterproof interior. Cheaper, faster, but limited to rectangular and gentle curves. ~$45K–$80K. Good budget choice for rectangular family pool.
  • Cast-in-place reinforced concrete: Old-school formed concrete. Rarely used now — shotcrete is superior for almost every case.

Shape language.

  • Rectangular / lap: Clean modern look, best for serious swimming, easiest to add lane lines. Cheapest. 8m×3m to 14m×4m typical.
  • Freeform: Curved organic edges, follows the natural landscape. Great for acreage and lifestyle blocks. Adds 15–30% to cost vs rectangular.
  • Infinity edge / knife-edge weir: One or more edges has zero rim — water cascades into a hidden trough below. Spectacular for canal and view blocks. Adds $25K–$60K vs standard.
  • Beach entry / zero depth: Pool gradually rises from 0mm depth to swimming depth. Great for toddlers and dogs. Adds $8K–$15K.
  • Integrated spa: Spa pocket adjacent to or built into the pool, shared filtration. $12K–$25K additional.

Interior finishes.

  • Pebble (Pebblecrete, Quartzon, Diamond Brite): Aggregate-and-cement matrix. Textured grippy surface, 8–15 year primary lifespan on the Gold Coast (salt accelerates wear). ~$8K–$14K for an 8m pool. Most common.
  • Quartz / Quartzon: Quartz aggregate, smoother and more durable than pebble. 15–25 year lifespan. ~$12K–$20K.
  • Full mosaic tile: Glass or ceramic mosaic over the entire interior. 30+ year lifespan if grout maintained. ~$25K–$50K for an 8m pool. Premium finish.
  • Solid tile: Larger porcelain or stone tile. Premium architectural look. ~$35K–$70K.

Build timeline (typical 8m×4m rectangular concrete pool).

  1. Week 1–2: Site prep, excavation, dewatering setup if needed, rebar installation.
  2. Week 3: Shotcrete spray + curing. Plumbing rough-in.
  3. Week 4–6: Render / waterproof. Coping installation. Tile / pebble interior prep.
  4. Week 7–9: Interior finish (pebble or tile). Fill, balance, commission equipment.
  5. Week 10–12: Surround paving, glass fence, landscaping. Form 23 inspection. Handover.

Engineering & compliance.

  • Structural engineer-certified rebar plan (cage diameter, spacing, lap)
  • QBCC Form 17 lodged with private building certifier
  • Hydrostatic-uplift design for low-water-table sites (Coombabah, parts of Helensvale)
  • Canal-corridor setback compliance for waterfront blocks
  • QDC MP 3.4 / AS 1926.1 barrier integration in design
  • Form 23 final Pool Safety Certificate from registered inspector
