Pool builders & resurfacers in Mermaid Beach.
Mermaid Beach is one of the Gold Coast’s original beachside suburbs — narrow 500–700m² blocks running back from Hedges Avenue and the Highway, mostly developed in the 1970s–90s with first-wave suburban pools. Half our local work here is resurfacing those ageing pebble pools; the other half is fibreglass installs squeezed into tight rear yards.
The Mermaid Beach pool story.
Original pool stock right in the resurface window.
About 60% of Mermaid Beach houses with pools have a 1980s or 1990s concrete pool with an original pebble (Pebblecrete or Quartzon) interior. Pebble lifespan in a salt-chlorinator Gold Coast pool is 12–20 years; the original Mermaid Beach pool wave is now 25–40 years old. Surfaces are sandpaper-rough, aggregate is pinning out, and rust streaks from corroding steel rebar are appearing. The fix is a full chip-off + bond + new interior in pebble, quartz or full mosaic tile. $9K–$22K (pebble/quartz) or $25K+ for tiled.
Narrow-block fibreglass crane access.
Mermaid Beach blocks typically have 2m side setbacks on each side and an established palm or two between the house and the fence. That restricts crane access for fibreglass shell delivery to shells under ~8m. Most often that’s fine — 7–8m fibreglass is a perfect family-pool size. But for larger shells we sometimes need to remove a section of side fence temporarily or coordinate with the neighbour, and very occasionally helicopter delivery is the only option (priced $5K–$10K extra).
Glass fencing + ocean salt air.
Pool fencing on Mermaid Beach blocks faces direct ocean salt air. Standard aluminium balustrade hardware corrodes fast in this environment — we spec marine-grade 316 stainless or full powder-coated aluminium with stainless fixings, NOT the cheap 304 stainless that some installers use inland. Toughened glass is the same regardless. Hardware lifetime in salt air: 304 stainless 3–5 years (visible rust), 316 stainless 12–15 years, premium-coated aluminium 15–20 years.
